Most of us are taught only to love and care for our family and friends and certain types of animals, but not to necessarily love or even pay attention to ourselves, strangers, difficult people, and so many other living creatures.

But inequities, abuse, and exploitation can result from loving unequally and selectively, picking and choosing who deserves it and who doesn’t. That’s why the Buddha encouraged us to love indiscriminately and boundlessly—because he understood that love is a powerful force for good.
